GENERAL
- Assist with Montlhy Open House event (dog & cat shelters are open to public)
- Clean up and set up before event
- Help answer questions
- Show dogs & cats to prospective adoptors
- Help keep environment safe and pleasurable
- Assist with off-site adoption activities (typically PetCo) - Saturdays & Sundays as needed (approx every three months)
- Transport dogs and cats to/from shelter
- Transport tables, cages etc and help set-up
- Stay at PetCo to show dogs and cats
- Assist with off-site Pet Photo events (Pet Photos with Santa, Pet Photos with the Easter Bunny) - seasonal
- Help set-up tables and photo environment
- Help manage customers and pets
- Dress up in the Santa or Easter Bunny costume
- Take Polaroid photo of new dogs & cats for posting on Web site - as needed
- Restock shelter supplies (paper towels, trash bags, bleach, toilet paper, etc) - as needed (typically weekly)
- Post shelter activities (Open House, Fund Raiser, Photos with Santa, etc) in area stores - as needed
DOGS
- Play with / train dogs - weekly when available (necessary to maintain dog's social interaction and attitude)
- Brush & comb dogs - as needed (necessary to maintain dog's social interaction and keep dog clean)
- Transport dogs to/from vets (initial shots and examinations) - as needed during weekdays
- Give heartworm pills to dogs - monthly
- Give special medications to dogs - when needed
- Refill kennel pools - weekly during summer
- Refill/clean outside water buckets - when needed
- Clean up kennel area for Open House - monthly
- Bathe & trim dogs - as needed, infrequent
- Pick-up supplies (dog, cat & general) from collection bins and deliver to shelter - weekly
- Maintain contact with other area shelters for sharing of overstocked or unusual supplies (bird seed, ferret food, etc)
- Evaluate / temperament test incoming dogs (after proper training, apprenticeship and experience) - as needed
- Arrange appointments to show dogs to potential adopters (after proper training, apprenticeship and experience) - as needed
CATS
- Select days/evenings on volunteer calendar for sign up to clean and feed for the month posted
- Sign in the log book on counter and update with current cat information and observations when visiting shelter
- Spend quality time petting and giving attention to cats (Important to some new entries who can be very timid and one on one attention helps cat adjust)
- Clean cages making sure litter is scooped and blankets are not soiled - daily
- Refill large clean litter pail - when needed
- Empty soiled litter pail - daily
- Clean and refill food and water dishes - daily.
- Sweep and make sure Shelter is presentable for visitors - when needed
- Dispense medications - when needed.
- Brush and cut nails - when needed
- Launder and dry soiled towels - when needed.
- Transport cats to vet for initial tests, first vet visit or sick visits - when needed (usually weekdays)
- Assist with Open House - monthly (Good experience for screening potential adopters and showing cats)
- Attend scheduled volunteer meetings - when notified
DOG FEST (fund raiser) - yearly
- Attend planning meetings
- Solicit donations and perticipation from area businesses
- Contact organizations for demonstrations
- Help set-up tables, signs, fencing & food at the event
- Distribute flyers at are stores (Aminal hospital, pet food stores, dunkin donuts, supermarkets etc)
