Winterize Your Doghouse If your dog spends all or most of its time outside, it deserves a warm, dry, secure place to sleep. A doghouse that was a perfect fit for your new puppy may be too small now. Your dog should be able to sit up straight in his house or lie stretched out on his side. A house that is too large is also not good since it allows the dog's body heat to escape. Clean, dry bedding is essential. Change bedding in the doghouse at least once a year. Straw, hay, and wood shavings make good bedding choices. Other materials such as old blankets, rugs or newspapers pack down more easily, becoming less comfortable and providing less warmth. Check bedding often during the winter and add more if it becomes packed down or replace it if it becomes wet. Make sure the dog house door faces away from cold winter winds - generally facing the south or southeast is best. You can also turn the house so that it faces a garage or shed wall. A flap for the door can easily be made by nailing or stapling a heavy duty rubber car mat above the door. Also keep your dog's house in good repair. Check the roof often - they break down quickly if your dog enjoys sitting or standing on the roof. Check also for sharp or splintered areas. Lastly, even the best dog house may not be enough during severe, bitter cold. Bring your pet in. Never forget a dog is a companion animal and suffers without human contact. If it is too cold for you to be out with your dog - maybe your dog should be in with you! | Dog Care | Cat Care | General Pet Care | |
